Better Calcium: Plant Source vs. Rock Source

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in our bodies. We all know that we need calcium for strong bones and teeth. But did you know calcium provides many other health benefits? It is needed for muscle contraction, blood vessel expansion and contraction, the secretion of hormones, and a host of other biological functions. It is also used to transmit pulses throughout our nervous system. When calcium intake is too low due to inadequate absorption, we start to use calcium stored in our bones to maintain normal biological functions. This can lead to significant bone loss as we age. In spite of its many benefits, calcium supplementation has been getting some bad press due to several published studies linking this mineral to increased heart attack risk, especially in women. However, these studies fail to explain the differences between rock-based calcium carbonate and citrate supplements, and whole food, plant-based calcium supplements. There are many advantages to choosing a plant-based calcium over a rock-source calcium. It is widely known that plants from nature are the preferred source of nutrients for the body. Plant-based calcium used in whole food supplements like Vitamin Code RAW Calcium provides naturally occurring minerals, and trace elements like magnesium, silica, boron, vanadium and strontium that are linked to bone health. The secret is in a South American marine algae called Algas Calcareas. This remarkable plant is naturally rich in calcium and other minerals which our bodies identify as food!

By: Angela Salamey

At Better Health, we strive to help you look and feel your best at every age! The purpose
of the Skin-Care Chronicles is to educate our patrons on the healing benefits of health &
beauty aides. After all, your skin is your largest organ. It protects the rest of your organs
from harsh environmental toxins, keeping your ‘insides’ at a stable 98.7° temperature.
When we think about vitamins, we mostly think about supplemental nutrients for
our ‘inner-selves’, but; what about our ‘outer-shelves’?
Here are my Top 3 products of the month for radiant skin, healthy hair, and strong nails:

Spring into Better Health

It’s spring cleaning time at Better Health! We are not talking about housekeeping, or organizing closets. We are talking about spring cleaning your vital organs, and detoxifying your body. Cleansing is a widely used method of detoxing the body of harmful chemicals and bacteria, eliminating waste and excess fluid. Though our bodies naturally detox everyday, eliminating or neutralizing toxins through the liver, colon and kidneys; it may be helpful to give these vital organs some extra support.

Detox Tips: Liver, Colon & Kidneys

  • Switch to using natural cleaning products free of chlorine, toxic chemicals, dyes, and synthetic fragrances

  • Reduce alcohol intake, and eliminate smoking/second-hand smoke

  • Exercise and eat a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, fiber, and organic produce

  • Do a gentle whole-body cleanse twice a year (Spring & Fall) to support healthy liver, colon & kidney function. Try our Garden of Life Raw Cleanse

  • Add an herbal cleansing supplement to your daily routine such as Milk Thistle or Cornsilk

These tips are recommended by the American Liver Foundation, and our favorite doctor – Dr. Oz!

Love the Skin You’re in!

We do not often think of the skin as an organ, but that’s exactly what it is! In fact, it is the largest detoxifying organ of the body. In addition to the liver, colon and kidneys, our skin helps us eliminate waste by excreting acidic substances that can inhibit proper excretion of waste. Further, our sweat glands help release toxins and heavy metals that would otherwise cause harm to our internal systems. Love the skin you’re in by switching to natural body products free of sulfates, parabens, aluminum and synthetic fragrances. All of our 13 stores have a variety of health & beauty aids to nourish and cleanse your skin, from head to toe!

The show that launched a thousand phone calls…

It’s no secret that Dr. Oz has had a positive impact on the supplement industry. He is easily one of the most closely followed TV personalities by both nutritional retailers and health-conscious consumers.

Dr. Oz’s show last week, on Raspberry Keytones, struck a major chord with viewers. Before the show was over, our 13 stores were flooded with calls for this little-known, fat-reducing supplement. Dr. Oz called it “The Miracle Fat Burner in a Bottle”. As always, Better Health rushed to serve the needs of its customers! We are now one of the few retailers fully stocked with this fat-reducing miracle. Click the link below to view the memorable Dr. Oz video on Raspberry Keytones!

Go Veg with Better Health: The Plant-Based Diet

For this short post, we would like to address some concerns about protein, followed by a list of pertinent supplements for Vegan lifestyles.

Are you thinking about switching to a Plant-based diet? You’ve come to the right place! The Better Health Store can help equip you with all of the education and supplementation you will need to make a smooth Vegan transition.

Perhaps you have heard about Plant-based diets, or you know someone who is Vegan. Perhaps your doctor has urged you to eat more vegetables, or your kids have begged you to try their tofu ‘Chik’n’. Whatever the case may be, we are here to tell you, a Plant-based diet CAN be done! With proper planning, education, and nutritional supplements being Vegan is a healthy alternative to the traditional Western American diet.

Please take a moment to view the above video. At The Better Health Store you will find multiple delicious alternatives to dairy and animal protein products. You will find there is no vitamin, mineral, or nutrient your body needs that cannot be obtained from a plant source. As you can see from the above video, the Plant-based diet is a broad topic with many aspects and subtopics. For this short post, we would like to highlight some myths about protein, followed by a list of pertinent supplements for Vegan lifestyles.

A Question of Protein

There are many misconceptions about protein discussed at length in Dr. T. Colin Campbell’s book, The China Study. I have been Vegan for over a decade now; and I can tell you from personal experience – meat and dairy are options not necessities. Here are some of the most common questions/concerns people have about Plant-based diets:

  • How will I get enough protein?
  • What if I don’t like/am allergic to soy?
  • How will I get enough to eat/to feel full?
  • What if I am on a low-carb, or other special diet?
  • I am an athlete! I need my meat and my whey protein!
  • How will I get other essential vitamins and minerals like B-12, D3, Iron, etc.?

There are many more questions and concerns to be addressed, but for this short post, we will start here. The simplest answer to all of these questions and concerns is my personal shopping list: Chia seeds, Peas, Lentils, Beans, Almonds, Brown Rice, Spinach, Kale, Flax, Saviseed, Peanut Butter, Avocados, berries, and more. These are foods rich in protein, Omega-3, B-12, Iron, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Further, these are hearty, healthy foods that will leave you feeling full and satisfied. It is possible to be Vegan and not eat an ounce of soy. Notice soy is not even on my shopping list.

For the concerned athlete, Better Health has a new line of Plant-based sports nutrition products called Vega Sport. Created by Ironman Triathlete, Brendan Brazier, Vega Sport offers a complete 3 part workout program of essential nutrients. For example, take their delicious recovery Performance Protein powder:

Vega Sport Performance Protein will help improve performance, increase muscle synthesis and strength, reduce inflammation and enhance recovery. It features 20 grams of complete plant-based protein, 5,000mg of BCAAs, digestive enzymes, and glutamine in a broad spectrum blend of sprouted whole grain brown rice, green pea, hemp, alfalfa and spirulina proteins! Say goodbye to whey, allergens, inflammation, and digestive issues.

Better Supplements for a Better Plant-based Diet

Here are the supplements we recommend for those on, or thinking about starting a plant-based diet:

Get your Omega 3-6-9’s with Minami Vegan DHA or Barlean’s Vegan Omega Swirls. No need for fish oil! These supplements will have all of your Omega needs covered.

Un-stress and stay energized with Garden of Life Raw B-12. This vegetarian, raw supplement will insure you are never deficient on vital B-12!

Every one needs a good, quality, whole-food multi-vitamin. Try Mega Food One Daily for Men or Women.

Most people, especially in Michigan, are deficient in vitamin D3. We recommend  Garden of Life Raw D3 2000, or 5,000.

To aid in healthy digestion and absorption of nutrients, we recommend a quality digestive enzyme and probiotic blend. Try  Enzymedica Digest Gold + Probiotics
